I have given up making conversation at work now, as everytime I try I get talked over by the woman sat opposite me about when I'm about 5 words in and I trail off into the abyss. Plus she does that thing to her "s"'s that Cunt Cliff Richard does and its fucking irritating. And she thinks she knows everything.

But on the other hand she hates me cos I'm thin and have nice hair.

Swings and roundabouts really

I finished Ghost Dancers last night. This makes me sad. At least I’ll have the nerd withdrawal symptoms to keep me occupied in the meantime, I suppose.

I’m coming across more and more people spreading a rather poisonous lie along the lines that “being happy” is a matter of choice, rather than an end result. Waking up in the morning and saying to yourself “Today I am going to be happy” is just as pointless and futile as waking up in the morning and saying to yourself “Today I am going to be the strongest man in the world!” and then running headlong into motorway traffic, intending to grab the first truck you see speeding towards you and toss it off the road.

The weekend starts later today. Would people like to go and do something interesting this evening, or is everyone else still content to sit and gently decompose in the Sal?

Quote of the Day:
“The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. The happiness of credulity is a cheap and dangerous quality.”

11:42 pm - Sad :(
So i made the decision that my cats have got to go. My allergy is getting worse and my medication doesn't really help.

I've found a home for Jem, my baby and she is leaving me next weekend, i cant stop crying. I know you shouldn't have favourites but she is, always has been, my little baby, so affectionate and the most adorable cat ever, everyone falls in love with her. To say im gutted is an understatement and i really dont know how im going to cope, just thinking about it puts me in tears to point i want to be sick.
I hate this so much. I dont know what else to say, i just feel sick.

As much as I’m enjoying the Dark Future stories, I’m aware the end is getting near. I’ve finished both versions of Route 666 now, and I’m over half way through Ghost Dancers - the last published book in the series, and then that’s it. All done. Some of these stories were republished, in an “updated” (read “cynically violated”) form in 2005, along with some new books in the same setting – but by different authors. Cold logic would dictate that I obtain and read these as well, but instinct counsels caution. Hmm.

KDF on Tuesday was amusing on a number levels – starting with the fact that the two instructors chose to turn up in their plate armour on what I heard referred to as “the hottest day of the year”. Poor bastards. Heh. I feel I’m starting to get back into the swing of things after so long away, but I’m still left feeling that there are a few elements missing from my basic toolbox that I need to work on. I’m marginally happier with my footwork than I was, so that’s some progress, I suppose.

Quote of the Day:
“One thing I've learned is this: Never allow yourself to hate a people because of the actions of a few. Hatred and bigotry destroyed my nation, and millions died. I would hope that most people did not hate Germans because of the Nazis, or Americans because of slaves. Never hate, it only eats you alive. Keep an open mind and always look for the good in people. You may be surprised at what you find.”

This was in the Fancy Dress Window

I don't think Amy wears it down to her MOUTH

This is a REVELATION in toilet roll dispenser design in terms of CONCEPT and FUNCTION:

From their website:

Ideal for high traffic washrooms with multiple cubicles
Single sheet dispensing reduces consumption
Customer Satisfaction

Fully lockable dispenser made from tough plastic for security and strength
Dispenser ensures a single sheet is dispensed every time.
Compact size of only 270(dia) x 170(d)mm allows the unit to work effectively in even the smallest cubicles.

OK ( I have NO IDEA HOW TO TURN THIS ORANGE OFF)

1. Conceptually, it resembles an ASSHOLE with something popping out of the middle that forms a SAUSAGE SHAPE.  Why not JUST MAKE THE PAPER BROWN!

2. As the blurb says '
Single sheet dispensing reduces consumption" BUT WHO WANTS TO WIPE THEIR BUM WITH ONE SHEET OF PAPER? The Convenient sheet size is NOT Ideal for use, in fact nothing could be MORE INFURIATING than a dispenser that delivers ONE SHEET AT A TIME!

3.  Because they haven't clocked the ASS concept, they haven't realised that the SMARTONE logo looks EVEN MORE LIKE AN ASS than the dispenser does!

If you're interested, the dispenser can be bought for £9.34 and rolls cost £21.14 for six rolls which equates to a DEMONIC 6666 singley dispensed sheets.

12:57 am - One day It will please me to remember even that they played Janis

Last night RULED!

I met up with Lucy at the Rescue Rooms at about eight  so we could check out the Punk Rockers going into the New York Dolls show but disappointingly they were fairly few and far between.  There were a few glam rockers in fact one of them sold me a fanzine with ‘bitch’ in the title that had some stuff about Johnny Thunders in it that looks pretty well put together and came with a compilation CD which will be either funny or tragic (first song title ‘0800 Fuck You’).  Anyone writing about Johnny Thunders in 2008 is in my cool club though.  It was so good to see Lucy properly, we haven’t hung out and chatted on our own for a while even though, until recently, we saw each other at the quiz.

We checked out some of Loyalties, the support, who were a head-down slightly glam punk band with only a smattering of Chuck Berry riffs and a lot of chanty choruses. We got told off by a bouncer for standing in the DJ Booth so had a sitty on down so that by the time the New York Dolls had come on and the place had filled up we were 2/3rds back and Lucy couldn’t see anything.

I thought it was GREAT. I’ve seen David Johansson before when he did the Harry Smiths blues thing and had a beard like Richard Branson but this was David Johansson and next to him Sylvain Sylvain who I LOVED as well just for looking like he was LOVING being in the New York Dolls and playing live again.  You’ve got to think about the story, you start off playing in this little scene in New York that gets world-wide recognition but there is NO MONEY in it, one of your friends in the band DIES, you make a great album, tour a bit and by 1977 when all the stuff you influenced seems to be taking off it’s all over.  Johansson did some solo stuff and became BUSTER POINDEXTER and appears in SCROOGED, Johnny Thunders and jerry Nolan form the INCREDIBLE Heartbreakers, I think Sylvain kept playing dolls songs but fifteen years later when everything had been pretty patchy, Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan had died so, in a way, it was all only ever going to be history.  It was kind of done with.  You were never going to see the New York Dolls again.

I called Morrissey a DICK a lot last night (to the distress of some people sitting next to us) but to have the IDEA to approach the remaining New York Dolls and get them to play, 30 years after they had split up, imagining that they still COULD and that it might not be embarrassing, has to be the heart-felt gamble of a fan and I can’t not give him credit for that like I can’t not give him credit for the book/zine he wrote about the New York Dolls.  I was a sceptic to some extent, Johnny Thunders was SOOOOOO much of that band (My friend Shaun texted me saying he was going to see Dolly Parton last night because she was the original member) but seeing the film of the Royal Festival Hall show and how the guitar guy was playing perfect Johnny Thunders riffs and Johansson was AMAZING made me kick myself for not going..

I was talking to Stuart, the sound engineer about the ENORMITY of these people coming to our town and he was telling me about when Scotty Moore played and just told everyone stories about Elvis and how Stuart was doing the sound for SCOTTY MOORE and for a lot of the night (especially after the show) I think the thing that overwhelmed me the most was that all the stuff I’ve read about these people, ‘please kill me’, all of the biographies and magazine articles, all of the records I have and the thousands and thousands of hours of thinking about these people and THERE THEY ARE, in that room.  That’s DAVID JOHANNSON…..singing JET BOY! To add extra value, Sam Yaffa from Hanoi Rocks, who I don’t think even plays with Hanoi Rocks now was on bass (you’ve got to factor the Killer Kane aspect into the story too, thirty years in the wilderness then shortly after the reunion, he dies – what a GREAT last chance and a way of reminding people of who you are before you go).  Sam Yaffa looked less WEIRD now than he did in his twenties.

The big bone of contention in the show was always going to be the guitar-work.  I was ambivalent throughout and knew I was being unfair every time I frowned when the guitarist did something that Johnny thunders wouldn’t have or couldn’t have.  I’m not sure it was the same guy who did the Royal Festival Hall but on reflection he did a good job. I wasn’t 100% happy with his sound, a tiny bit too crunchy (I mean tiny) and there were too many false harmonics flying around but you KNOW there had been a meeting that went ‘try to be consistent with what Johnny did on the albums but we’re an ongoing band now with a new album so play the songs your way’ and to be fair stepping into that roll in that band makes CJ Ramone’s job seem easy.  Added to that Sylvain Sylvain kept the simple part riff/part chord thing going in a more rudimentary and Chuck Berry way so you had to be LOOKING for problems and I’m sure I was guilty of that.

The set was made up of classics, Jet Boy was Incredible, Trash was incredible, You Can’t put your arms around a memory running into Lonely Planet Boy was touching, Personality Chris was strangely less strong and there were a few songs from the new album which I’m not keen on but hey chose the best ones for the show.  They did, unforgivably play ‘another little piece of my heart’ though.

After the show it was SURREAL.  I was sitting with Lucy and Anton and having a cool chat but to our left were the new drummer and guitarist having their dinner and over by the food bar Sam Yaffa was talking to some girls but my favourite bit was Sylvain Sylvain standing by the food bar with a menu open in front of him looking like he was in a Bob Gruen photo.  The photo in my head is better than any real photo would have been and its going to be an amazing memory-nugget.  I spent about an hour and a half just being amused and happy that the two of them were hanging out in the room chatting to fans and while I normally like to go and get badges, it was cool chatting with my friends with this also going on in the room, I wasn’t so much star-struck as happy that these people were just milling around and people were appreciating them.

It was GREAT having a post show chat with Lucy and Anton which consisted largely of me saying stuff was SHIT (Art Brut, The Mighty Boosh etc) and how I often don’t resent specific people but the emperor’s new clothes mentality of the HUGE umbers of people (who often should know better) that love them.  The Smiths are no more important to me than the Housemartins, who aren’t’ important to me at all but have a similar place in music and Morrisey is an overtly over-intelectual talking loud and saying nothing, but one BILLION people from three or four generations of music fans buy into him as profound and/or witty.  Oasis are a sub-standard, dull band who make music that doesn’t even have rhythms you can dance to but somehow there are LOVED by LEGIONS and there is NOTHING THERE. I don’t get annoyed at the people themselves (although it’s funny to have a go at them) but the sheer amount of RUBES who still bet £10 that the pea will be in the middle match box.

I’m sure, I’m pretty positive on the whole and Lucy and Anton know the topics to get me going AGAIN. Saying the words ‘Art Brut’ will always get them 20 minutes, saying ‘Jealous’ 20 more etc.

Anyway it was the COOOOOOOOOOOOOLEST night.  The night I went to see The New York Dolls.  In 2008.

Who? Woulda? Thunk it?

I used to read a lot of books. I mean, a lot. There was a time when eight books a week from the local library wasn’t enough, and when I was forced to change primary schools at eleven years old or so, I got into trouble on a couple of occasions because the teachers simply wouldn’t believe that I was even capable of reading the books I was bringing into school, let alone getting through them as fast as I did. Let’s put it this way: When the second most advanced reader in my class was just starting out on the Point Horror books, I’d already devoured most of Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion stories (All of Hawkmoon and Corum, and most of Elric by that point) and was well stuck into the works of Terry Pratchett and Clive Cussler, too.

But I remember it being Jurassic Park that caused the most fuss. They remained unsympathetic even when I pointed out that I’d read it from cover to cover in a single overnight sitting a couple of years before (this was a while before Hollywood got its claws into it, so I’m original full-length version, not the cut down kiddie-friendly version that came out after the film did).

Sadly, this was all Before the Internet, so things are rather different now. I maintain that I read as much or perhaps even more than I ever did, but these days it tends to be on a screen rather than on paper. It must also be said that doing my English degree seriously damaged my love of reading for a number of years, and if I’m honest I’d have to say that I don’t think that its really recovered since. That’s why, to me at least, it’s been so remarkable that since I got those old out-of-print Dark Future novels the other day I’ve been increasingly turning my back on the internet and curling up in bed with a book. It’s been a while, and while I don’t think it’ll last, I’m rather enjoying it while it does.

After receiving a rather painful blister on the sole of my heel today I was googling my little arse off to find a solution to my pain. After reading the such of "Ladies: A three-inch heel creates seven times more stress on the front of the foot than a one-inch heel."

My response was "But your feet will also look like a bag of gay"

It was so hot slogging to and from the sorting office that I needed second shower and another change of clothes by the time I got back in. Once I’d cleaned up, I broke out my guitar for the first time in far too long and spent some time going over my previous attempts at songwriting. Although I’ve got quite a lot of material, there is only really the structure for three tracks at present. I could get a lot further with them if I could overcome the monolithic apathy the seizes me whenever I try to make myself think about programming drum tracks for them. Heh.

When my hands packed up after the customary three hours of so, I spent pretty much the rest of the day reading. Very enjoyable it was, too. I even stayed in on Saturday night because there was nothing going on that seized my interest. I could have gone to Exile in Leicester, I guess, but considering that my bank account currently bursts into tears if you so much as glare at it sternly I decided to give it a miss this month.

Sunday was again pretty much a write off. Too much sleep, then a shopping expedition (I still need more bloody toothpaste though), and then the rest of the day spoiled and squandered by the worst migraine I’ve had in ages. I’d been quite lucky in that I haven’t had a bad one for some time, and I should have known better than to hope that it would last. Arse.

KDF tonight. Anyone else up for it?

02:21 pm - The Media
I find it funny that people are genuinely scared of this.
It appears sci-fi and the media seem to have combined to form some kind of panic as soon as something slightly complicated like a micro-black hole or whatever gets mentioned.

I'd like to reassure everyone that the end of the world is not about to happen when this thing gets up and running and at worst, a small part of france might get blown up. But sadly that is also quite unlikely.

Today I have ripped a chunk off the rim of a glass beaker with my awesome strength. Fortunately it did not see fit to cut me for it.

So what did I do this week, hmm. Not all that much really, save get annoyed with people at work. There was another bbq on Wed, which was good and had even more food than last time including super unhealthy salad (the best kind by far). Ooh, and bananas cooked with chocolate buttons. Pretty sure I was generally slack other than that, though I can't be expected to remember several days ago.

Over the weekend there was a wee bit of socialising at the pub, though I did miss the guitar hero comp again. And succumbed to kebab temptation this time, doh. Saw a couple of films on the Sunday, The castle of Fu Manchu and Idiocracy.

I'm not sure if I've seen a Fu Manchu film before or not, but being a 70s film it was super racist, super full of red and green lighting and super silly. It's weird that it's like an inverse bond film, with the bad guy as the main feature. It seems that there is this same good guy (who's name already escapes me) who keeps defeating him but he lacks charisma. Except when it comes to turning around and punching folks, he's quite good at that. The plot seemed to be that Fu Manchu had developed a means to turn water in to ice, incredible I know. However he'd mastered it to the extent that he could freeze the Carribean, making it a somewhat more impressive, though perhaps less generally accessible technology. And get this, the secret to his water freezing device was - Opium! What a guy.

The other film was Idiocracy, which had slipped under our raidar and we just caught it on the sky box. Luke Wilson is Joe Average, frozen as part of a military experiment and forgotten until 2500. Almost like it could be futurama but with a significant socio-political commentary - the entire world has gone stupid. This is due to the progression of humanity through low births for smart folk and high births for dumb folk (as highlighted by Korn, do like that track). Thus, Wilson is now the smartest man in the world and must solve it's many problems. Fairly amusing over all, though quite telling that the stupid humour that the stupid folks were laughing at was what I was laughing at too... "Ow my balls" is a great idea for a program :p

On Wednesday I went into John Lewis for some replacement daylight bulbs; the one which illuminated my room had expired, and I hate the yellow colour that conventional bulbs give off. Clearly I look like a thief or a junkie because there were at least half a dozen staff discreetly shadowing me around the store (or at least trying to be discreet about it), and I had less than five seconds to examine the shelves of the lighting section before the assistant pounced on me and demanded to know what I was looking for. Still, less rude than the staffer in Boots on Sunday who saw me passing over the heads of the family of chavs she was talking to, and immediately exclaimed “OH MY GAWD!” at the top of her voice. If I’d thought it’d make any difference, I’d have made a note of her name and made a complaint.

Friday was another night at the Sal, since there still isn’t anything better to do (I fucking miss the Old Vic). It wasn’t quite as much fun as the last time, although on this occasion ample amusement was provided by [info]vampiric_monkey, while I attempted to sell KDF to [info]straythoughts and [info]jonothecynic.

I left the Sal comparatively early on Friday night and head straight home, because for the second Saturday running I had to get up at Stupid O’Clock – this time to head down to the sorting office for my aforementioned Dark Future books.

He crashed into it, killing the horse, and the fighter was nothing but twisted wreckage. We all saw it and began thinking about the funeral, when suddenly the debris moved and he climbed out without a scratch, still wearing his sunglasses. He was ready to go up again. Amazing.”

The Doctor: "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream; people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold.

Come on, Ace. We've work to do." (Survival - 1989)
